Holger Thoss

revisiting his first wedding

Holger Thoss is one of the four photographers who make up Ritual Collective, which offers editing sessions to help photographers find deeper layers in their work.

This time Holger turned his eye to his own work, looking back at the first wedding he photographed, nearly 30 years ago.

“I am selecting some of the same images but also finding new ones that I didn’t value the same way in 1992.”

“Re-visiting and learning from past work (It’s never past, anyway). Editing images from the first wedding that I ever photographed - and actually the first wedding I ever attended. I wanted to find meaningful photos on the first roll, seeing how my eyes reacted.”

Holger Thoss grew up in the German countryside.  In his early twenties, he came to New York for an internship at the Aperture Foundation. He stayed to study at the International Center for Photography, learning from photographers he admired, like Elliott Erwitt, Erich Hartmann, Gilles Peress and Inge Morath.  For two years, he ran the darkroom for Magnum Photos, New York, handling negatives and prints in the pre-digital age. During that time he learned how to photograph real people in real situations, showing daily life as he saw it. The urge to go out and create images has motivated him for over 30 years.
